Google to Sell Motorola

Google to Sell Motorola. After buying cell phone manufacturer Motorola two years ago Google (GOOG) is selling it. Lenovo will purchase the smartphone maker for $2.91 billion. In the agreement Google will keep the "vast majority" of Motorola's IP. The sale will also remove a point of contention between other companies that build smatphones using Google’s Android operating system.  (GOOG): Pre-market: 1,135.00 +28.08 (2.54%)

Morning Coffee Pre-Market Wall Street News

Microsoft Share Jump On Earnings. Microsoft (MSFT) reported that their FQ1 net profit climbed +16% to $5.2B.  EPS were reported at $0.62 beating Wall Street estimates by $0.08. Revenues at the company also rose +16% to $18.53B. Microsoft's performance was boosted by strong corporate sales of its Office and server software.  Earlier this week Apple (APPL) announced that they would begin offering their latest operating system Maverick for free along with iWork which is their version of Office. Pre-market: 35.74 +2.02 (5.99%)

Govt. Set to Shut Down. The U.S. federal government is set to shut down tonight after midnight if a funding agreement is not worked out. Republican-led House passed a measure to fund the government that included a one-year delay to the individual mandate to Obamacare.  It also repealed the tax on medical devices. Businesses have already received the one-year delay. The Democrat-led Senate is due to meet today at 2 pm and they are expected to reject the House funding measures.

Morning Coffee Pre-Market Wall Street News

U.S. Housing Numbers Miss Estimates. The Commerce Department reported that July’s housing starts rose 5.9% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 896,000 units. Wall Street Economists had estimated that housing starts would come in at 900,000 units. June's numbers were revised upward to 846,000-units from the previously reported. Permits to build new homes increased 2.7% in July to a 943,000-unit pace also missing estimates. Economists had expected permits to rise to 945,000. Wall Street analysts are pointing to higher interest rates as the cause of the misses.
