CLOSING BELL

Dow 11117.06  +25.01, Nasdaq 2500.31  +20.20, S&P 1207.17  +9.65 

Blue chips and good earnings reports helped push the Dow and S&P 500 higher today.  The gains were broad based with all ten major sectors posting gains.

Energy stocks posted nice gains today on a rally in crude oil.  Oil closed the day up +$0.9% to $83.91 pushing the energy sector up +1.9% for today.

Companies posting better than expected earnings were: IBM (IBM) 129.69 -2.54, -1.92%, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) 65.99 -0.04, -0.06%, Coca-Cola (KO) 54.47 -0.85, -1.54% and Goldman Sachs (GS) 159.98 -3.34, -2.05%.   IBM traded lower as traders were not happy with the company’s margins, JNJ traded down on lowered forecast and Goldman was lower on news of fraud charges and forthcoming lawsuits.

After the close both Yahoo (YHOO) and Apple (AAPL) reported earnings that beat the street estimates.

Yahoo (YHOO) 18.42 +0.03, +0.16% reported Q1 EPS of +$0.22 beating estimates by +$0.13 on revenues of $1.13 billion.  Shares are trading at 17.93 -0.45, -2.45% in afterhours trading.

Apple (AAPL) 244.13 -2.94, -1.19% reported Q2 EPS of +$3.33 beating estimates by +$0.88 on revenues of $13.5 billion versus estimates of $12.04 billion. Shares are trading at 259.65 +15.06, +6.16% in afterhours trading.
