MORNING COFFEE

Is The EU Debt Crisis Spreading? Almost daily there have been news stories about the debt problems in the EU PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain).  While Greece and Portugal seem to be the worst of the bunch many investors have been fearful that the sovereign debt problem could spread.  On Friday there was a sharp sell-off in Italian assets leading some to believe that Europe's sovereign debt crisis was spreading. Now the EU has scheduled an emergency meeting today to discuss Europe's sovereign debt crisis and the possibility that it was spreading to Italy.   Five-year credit default swaps on Italian bonds this morning rose to a record high. Euro (EUR/USD) +1.40. Italy -3.30%

Small Businesses Will Not Hire. A recent survey released does not bode well for employment.  Almost two-thirds of small-businesses, which are the main drivers of jobs, said they don't expect to increase their workforce over the next year. With many businesses worried about the economy and future tax changes, 12% said they plan on cutting jobs and 19% said they would increase their payrolls. The survey follows Friday's terrible jobs report that showed only 18,000 jobs were created when economist had been expecting 80,000 jobs to have been created.
